Our outdoor store history began in 1996 when Elizabeth, along with her family, started a small archery pro shop and hunting store in central New York, in the town of Homer. In the early years her 4 children were all involved in the business in one way or another, but as the shop grew, so did the children, and life took them in various directions.
Her oldest daughter Erin, joined the military and has been moving around with them ever since. Melissa (Mel) came and went for awhile, but stayed full time after graduating college in 2003. Her oldest son Dave was a great salesman at the shop for a time, but soon left for other states and adventures. Chuck, the youngest, has been with the business since the beginning, and in the years that followed, he became an expert gunsmith.
In the beginning we primarily carried archery equipment, but soon obtained our firearms licenses to carry long guns and handguns.
Our deer processing plant opened in 1998 and that part of the business quickly expanded, processing hundreds of deer each year.
During the 22 years we were in business in NY, we added onto the building and expanded into all areas of shooting and hunting, as well as reloading, survival and trapping. We also gave numerous hunter safety courses, and held many youth and adult archery leagues and tournaments, both indoor and outdoor.
When the NYS SAFE act (a poorly named law) was passed in 2013, restricting businesses like ours, we did our best to continue business under the new regulations. Leaving NY was discussed but initially dismissed as it would be a such a huge task to move the business and our lives, to another state. We had a very loyal customer base, many of whom were good friends, and we loved the natural beauty of the area, surrounded by rolling hills and dairy farms. However in the spring of 2017, circumstances made it clear that it was time to finally get out of the anti-gun state of NY.
God has blessed us greatly in bringing us to Tyler county and providing wonderful people to help the business grow and flourish here in West Virginia. We are grateful for His blessings, and for the amazing customers He has given us and we look forward to years ahead here in "Almost Heaven".
